JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2010) - Virginia Tech jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and didn't look back as the ETSU baseball team dropped a mid-week game to the Hokies 14-3 Wednesday night at Cardinal Park.

Josh Means (Kennesaw, Ga.) was tabbed with the loss dropping to 0-1 on the season for the Bucs (16-7, 5-1 A-Sun) after giving up seven runs on ten hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Patrick Scoggin earned the victory for Tech (18-9, 4-5 ACC) throwing 2.2 innings limiting ETSU to one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Offensively, Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way for the Buccaneers as Hoilman was 2-for-4 with a home run and a RBI, while Trent was 2-for-3 with two solo home runs.

Junior Austin Wates had five RBI in the game for Virginia Tech going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run.

The Hokies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Sean Ryan came around to score on a Wates double to right center.

With two outs in the top of the third, Virginia Tech got five straight hits pushing across four runs to take a 5-0 lead. A two-run single by Anthony Sosnoskie highlighted the scoring in the inning for the Hokies.

Tech added two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI doubles by Steve Domecus and Ronnie Shaban to make the score 7-0 Hokies.

ETSU led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back home runs. Hoilman crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left for his 12th home run of the season to lead off the inning. Trent followed the Hoilman home run depositing his seventh homer over the right field fence to cut the Virginia Tech lead to 7-2.

The Hokies extended their lead to 9-2 in the fifth as Matt Blow sent a two-run home run into the netting in left.

Wates put Virginia Tech up 12-2 in the sixth as he jumped on a 1-0 fastball for a three-run home run.

In the sixth, Trent sent his second home run of the game over the fence in right for a towering solo home run to cut the Tech lead to 12-3.

Shaban capped off the scoring for the Hokies in the eighth as he drove a two-run home run over the fence in right to make the final 14-3.
