Hokies down Bucs in mid-week clash, 14-3
Derek Trent Wednesday, March 31, 2010 JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2010) - Virginia Tech jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and didn't look back as the ETSU baseball team dropped a mid-week game to the Hokies 14-3 Wednesday night at Cardinal Park. Josh Means ( Patrick Scoggin earned the victory for Tech (18-9, 4-5 ACC) throwing 2.2 innings limiting ETSU to one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Offensively, Paul Hoilman ( Junior Austin Wates had five RBI in the game for Virginia Tech going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. The Hokies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Sean Ryan came around to score on a Wates double to right center. With two outs in the top of the third, Tech added two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI doubles by Steve Domecus and Ronnie Shaban to make the score 7-0 Hokies. ETSU led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back home runs. Hoilman crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left for his 12th home run of the season to lead off the inning. The Hokies extended their lead to 9-2 in the fifth as Matt Blow sent a two-run home run into the netting in left. Wates put Virginia Tech up 12-2 in the sixth as he jumped on a 1-0 fastball for a three-run home run. In the sixth, Shaban capped off the scoring for the Hokies in the eighth as he drove a two-run home run over the fence in right to make the final 14-3.
