Kennesaw, Ga. (April 8, 2006) - For the fourth time this season the ETSU baseball squad took the first two games of a conference series, only to fail in the bid to complete the sweep in game three.  The Bucs rallied from a three-run deficit in the final two innings of the day's first game to post a 5-4 win, but fell in the nightcap by a score of 6-0.

Senior Shane Byrne's (Johnson City, Tenn.) one-out solo home run in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Bucs to the come from behind victory after trailing 4-1 entering the eighth inning.  The homer was Byrne's fifth of the season and his 29th RBI.

Junior Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) led off the eighth with his sixth home run of the season and second of the series, cutting the lead to 4-2.  The Bucs (20-14, 8-7) later loaded the bases with one out, and junior Michael Courtney (Knoxville, Tenn.) delivered a game tying, two-RBI single to right center field to knot the game at four and set the stage for Byrne's ninth inning heroics.

Senior closer Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) shut the Owls down over the final two innings to improve to 6-2 on the season.  Calicutt relieved senior ace Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.) who turned in another strong performance for the Bucs.  Hall threw 123 pitches in seven-plus innings of work, striking out seven, and pitching out of multiple jams to limit Kennesaw State to four runs.  Michael Bohana took the loss for the Owls, falling to 2-5 on the season.

In the nightcap, the Bucs could never muster any offense against Owl starter Dan Dale, as the junior lefty tossed a complete game, shutting out ETSU for the first time this season and improving to 5-2.

Sophomore lefty Joey McCown (Alcoa, Tenn.), making his first weekend start of the season pitched extremely well, making just one big mistake, a fifth inning grand slam to Kennesaw State freshman center fielder Martin Baker.

The Owls (17-16, 8-7) added two insurance runs in the eighth inning, and Dale retired the Bucs in the ninth to complete the shutout.

The Bucs return home for a Tuesday meeting with UNC-Asheville at Cardinal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
