Tuesday, July 15, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 15, 2003) - Stephen Douglas, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Kennesaw, Ga., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for East Tennessee State beginning in 2004, head coach Tony Skole announced on Tuesday. Douglas has an impressive list of honors earned during his career at Kennesaw Mountain High School and with the prestigious East Cobb Baseball summer program. In 2001, Douglas was all-county honorable mention. He followed that up in 2002 by being named second-team all-county and to the Georgia High School Association All-Tournament Team. During that season, he was the Region AAAAA batting champion, hitting .468. Douglas led the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs with a 1.29 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. He also had a .409 batting average, was second in Cobb County with 15 stolen bases and was in the top-5 in the county and set a team record with 27 RBI. More accolades followed in 2003 as Douglas earned first-team all-county from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was again a member of the GHSAA All-Tournament Team. He also was named all-state in 2003 by the GHSAA. Douglas earned player-of-the-week honors from the GHSAA in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and he led Kennesaw Mountain to the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament championship in 2002 and 2003. His East Cobb Jackets team was the runner-up in the 2001 USSSA World Series as he led the team with a .526 batting average. He has been selected to East Cobb Baseball summer teams in each year since 1999. Douglas will be the third member of the East Cobb Baseball program on the 2004 Buccaneer roster, joining senior pitcher/outfielder Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore catcher/first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.). "Our coaching staff firmly believes that Stephen has a chance to be a very special player at East Tennessee State," said coach Skole. "He is a talented young man who we expect to be able to pitch and hit for us right away. He has had a very successful high school career and comes to us from the highly-respected East Cobb summer baseball program. Our fans will enjoy watching Stephen pitch and will also enjoy his smooth left-handed swing."
