JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 23, 2003) - The East Tennessee State baseball team showcased their talent for scouts from several major league organizations at the team's annual Scout Day, Tuesday afternoon from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn. First, each Buccaneer player ran a 60-yard dash for the scouts in attendance. Next, outfielders threw from right field to third base and to home and infielders took pre-game infield practice. All hitters then took batting practice with wooden bats followed by a five inning inter-squad scrimmage. When asked what catches their eye in these events, a major league scout broke down attributes that he looks for in a player. "For most position players, we look for someone with speed and arm strength. In corner players however, we look for power, because those are the guys that usually drive in most of your runs. We always look for good hitters, but hitting is something that everyone needs to work on. Even Ted Williams and Tony Gwynn always worked on their hitting" "In pitchers, we look for arm strength and command, a pitcher needs to hit their spots. They also must have at least two pitches. Arm strength is good, but you need to have something to keep the batter off-stride." East Tennessee State head coach Tony Skole was pleased at the performance of his players today. "I thought our kids had a pretty good day," said Skole. "Every player showed something positive, and some players had really good days." "Scout Days are called that because they are for the scouts. It gives major league organizations an up close look at our athletes. In 1999, my first year at ETSU, we had one scout show up for our Scout Day. Today, we had over 20 major league organizations and the Major League Scouting Bureau represented. I think it is a good indication of the direction our program is heading."
