GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 9, 2003) - ETSU junior second baseman Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) hit two solo home runs to power the Buccaneer offense, but UNC Greensboro rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a, 6-2, victory Sunday afternoon from UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. UNCG outfielder Ryan Galligan went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the eighth. With the victory, the Spartans (14-1, 2-1 SoCon) take two of three from the Bucs (5-10, 1-2 SoCon). With the game tied, 2-2, Galligan gave UNCG the lead for good with the bases clearing double into the right field gap off ETSU senior reliever Jarrod Hyder (Elizabethton, Tenn.). The three-run double sparked the five-run eighth inning. The sophomore, making just his second start of the season, added another double and a RBI triple off the centerfield wall in the second inning. Chris Mason made the lead stand tossing a scoreless ninth inning. The freshman closer did allow a pair of two-out ETSU singles, but got junior outfielder Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) to ground out, ending any hope of a Bucs' rally. The save was Mason's sixth of the 2003 campaign. ETSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead off UNCG starter Ryan Gordon. Howdeshell took Gordon deep down the right field line for his third home run of the season. Gordon settled down retiring six consecutive and 14 of the next 16 before Howdeshell stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Howdeshell blasted his fourth homer of the season, second on the day, giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead. ETSU freshman starter Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) kept the Spartans off the bases for most of the day. The southpaw worked into the sixth inning, allowing just one earned run on five hits. Calicutt struckout three and walked one. After a leadoff walk to Justin Saltalamacchia, who moved to second after Gordon's sacrifice bunt, Calicutt gave the lead to Hyder. Hyder promptly induced two groundouts, ending the UNCG threat. Hyder continued his solid effort in the seventh inning, getting UNCG in order. Hyder retired Kirk Strebin to lead off the eighth inning, but Jason Sarvis followed with a single up the middle. Saltalamacchia reached on a fielder's choice as Sarvis was forced at second. The Spartans then smacked back-to-back two-out singles. Nate Alden then walked to load the bases. The stage was set for Galligan's heroics. Hyder (1-1) picked up the loss and was charged for all five runs in the eighth inning on four hits. Gordon did not get a decision, but tossed 5.1 innings. The junior limited the Bucs to five hits and two earned runs, while fanning six. Michael Gulledge tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Jarrett Santos (5-0) picked up his team-leading fifth victory of the season. Santos kept ETSU off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore shortstop Justin Clear (LaFollette, Tenn.) and Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) were the only other Bucs' with more than one hit. Each went 2-for-4. The Bucs will return to the diamond on Friday night for the opener of their first home Southern Conference series, against VMI. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
