CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 18, 2003) -- Senior Jarrod Hyder (Elizabethton, Tenn.) pitched 7.2 innings allowing one run on nine hits to lead East Tennessee State over The Citadel 2-1 in Southern Conference baseball action Friday evening from Riley Park in Johnson City, Tenn. ETSU (11-22, 7-11 SoCon) scored its only two runs of the game in the third inning on a two-run homer to left field by junior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.). Freshman third baseman Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.), who reached on a throwing error by Citadel shortstop Matt Matulia, scored on the two-run blast. In the sixth, The Citadel (20-17, 10-6 SoCon) cut the lead in half, 2-1, on Chip Cannon's seventh home run of the season, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get. Cannon, who blasted a 3-2 pitch off the center field batter's eye, now has a team high seven homers on the season. The Cannon homer was the only run of the game for The Citadel. The Bulldogs had two runners in scoring position in the second with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth with two outs but failed to score in both situations. The Dogs left nine men on base, five of which were in scoring position. Hyder (5-1) earned the win for the Bucs, while Jonathan Ellis (5-4), who pitched seven innings and gave up the Howdeshell two-run homer, took the loss on two unearned runs. Senior Willie McKenzie (Kingsport, Tenn.) threw 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the 2003 season. Freshman right fielder Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Bucs with two hits on the evening. The Citadel and ETSU will meet for game two of the Southern Conference series at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 19, at the Bulldogs' Riley Park.
