Baseball Falls to No. 5 Georgia Tech, 6-5, in 10 Innings

Tuesday, March 05, 2002

Atlanta (Mar. 5, 2002) -- A one-out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning broke a 5-5 tie and gave fifth-ranked Georgia Tech (10-1) a 6-5 win over visiting East Tennessee State (5-5) on Tuesday afternoon from Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI groundouts from Clifton Remole and Wes Rynders. Georgia Tech stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Rynders drew a bases loaded walk and Matthew Boggs plated a run with an RBI groundout. An unearned run in the fifth inning made the score 5-0. The Bucs tied the game with a five-run sixth inning, recording all five of their hits in the game in that frame. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from senior shortstop Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.), his first of the season. Freshman catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.)drove in a run with a RBI groundout before senior outfielder Kirk Keithley (Peoria, Ill.) tied the game with a two-out RBI single. With the score knotted at five, Matt Murton, who had three hits in the game, led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double to left-center field. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Jeremy Slayden put runners on first and third base with a single to right field. Remole then belted a 1-0 pitch to the right field wall to drive in Murton with the winning run. Buccaneer sophomore pitcher Donnie Sharp (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) (1-2) took the loss, allowing one run in 0.2 innings. Neither starting pitcher figured into the decision, as Georgia Tech's Jeff Watchko surrendered five runs in six innings, and ETSU sophomore Matt Hensley (Powell, Tenn.) allowed five runs in 4.1 innings. Georgia Tech reliever Brian Burks (3-0) picked up the victory after tossing four perfect innings to close out the game. He retired all 12 batters he faced and struck out five. The Bucs return to action on Saturday at noon for their first Southern Conference games of the season, a doubleheader against Wofford from Spartanburg, S.C.
