Big Innings Carry UNCG Past East Tennessee State, 14-8

Saturday, March 16, 2002

Greensboro, N.C. (March 16, 2002) - It was one of those days for the East Tennessee State pitching staff, as UNC Greensboro jumped on Buccaneer pitching early, piling up an 13-2 lead after three innings on the way to a 14-8 Southern Conference baseball win over ETSU this afternoon. The win by the Spartans evened the series at 1-1. A double by Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the first brought home Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.) from second and gave the ETSU (6-9, 1-3 SoCon) an early 1-0 lead. The Spartans answered in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from Jason Sarvis and then broke the game open with seven in the second and five more in the third. ETSU's starter, Matt Hensely (Powell, Tenn.) got in trouble in the second, allowing the Spartans to load the bases with no outs. He then walked in the first run of the inning before Trevor Smith (Newport, Tenn.) took over on the mound. He fared no better, allowing a run scoring single and a sac fly before giving up the big hit, a grand slam to Ryan Gordon that made the score 8-1. After getting the first out in the third, UNCG had its next eight hitters reach base safely, getting six hits and two walks. The end result was the Spartans had another five runs on the board before the Bucs got a double-play to end the inning, taking a commanding 13-2 lead. Jackson Simerly (Bluff City, Tenn.) came on in relief to get the double-play ball that ended the inning and went the rest of the way for ETSU, shutting down UNCG the rest of the way. He allowed just one run in 5.2 innings of work, striking out three without allowing a walk. Boruff continued his hot hitting in the series, slamming his second home run in as many days in the eighth, bringing home Jason Brotherton (Erwin, Tenn.), who had walked. ETSU made some more noise in the ninth, scoring four more times before UNCG could come up with the final out of the game. With the bases loaded no outs, Terry singled home Brandon Cross (Bluff City, Tenn.) from second. Brotherton walked again to bring home the second run before a sac fly off the bat of Boruff, his fourth RBI of the day, brought home another. Terry scored the final run of the inning on an error on the UNCG second baseman. Scooter Michael started for UNCG and picked up the win, going 7.1 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Gordon was the big stick for the Spartans, going 2-for-4 with five RBIs and scoring a pair of runs. Boruff wound up going 3-for-4 with a double and home run, bringing home four runs. Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) and Terry each had a pair of hits for the Bucs. The two teams will finish the series on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
