Johnson City, Tenn. (April 20, 2002) - East Tennessee State's baseball team took advantage of five errors by the College of Charleston to score six unearned runs as the Buccaneers took an 8-5 Southern Conference baseball win at Cardinal Park this afternoon. The win squared the three-game series at one-game each. ETSU (15-22, 8-9 SoCon) took advantage of its opportunities early, scoring four unearned runs in the first inning. With one out, Jeremy Terry (Cumberland, Ky.) and Brandon Cross (Bluff City, Tenn.) singled to put runners on the corners. Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) then hit into a fielder's choice to first, with Terry getting thrown out at the plate and Cross moving to third. Kirk Keithley (Peoria, Ill.) then hit a bouncer to short that was misplayed, allowing Cross to score the first run of the game. Mike Giroud (St. Petersburg, Fla.) followed with a single that plated Moore. Scott Rose (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) then grounded a ball deep into the hole behind second that the Cougar second baseman threw away for the second error of the inning, allowing Keithley to score. Justin Clear (Lafollette, Tenn.) followed with another RBI single and the Bucs were up 4-0. ETSU added three more in the third to increase its advantage to 7-0, again scoring all its runs with two outs. Giroud delivered another RBI single that scored Keithley from second to start things off. Rose then doubled home Giroud and moved to third on throwing error by Cougar second baseman Jack Arroyo. Arroyo's second error of the inning on a grounder off the bat of Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) allowed Rose to score the final run of the frame. Buccaneer starter Reid Casey (Kingsport, Tenn.) was solid at the start of the game, setting down the first 11 hitters he faced before surrendering a single in the fourth. Charleston (24-14, 10-7 SoCon) finally got to Casey in the fifth, getting three runs. Brett Spivey led off the inning with a walk, and then scored when Zach Strong's single to center got by Turner. The Cougars then got an RBI double from Victor Martinez and a run-scoring single from Arroyo to cut the ETSU lead to 7-3. A pair of solo home runs off the bats of Lee Curtis and Strong in the sixth cut ETSU's lead to 7-5. The Bucs got one back in the seventh on a squeeze play by Clear that scored Giroud, who had led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on another Cougar error and was sacrificed to third by Rose. Jarrod Hyder (Elizabethton, Tenn.) came on to pitch for ETSU in the seventh, and shut down the Cougars the rest of the way, allowing just one hit and striking out one to record his second save of the season. Casey notched his sixth win, going six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. He struck out five against just one walk. Mike Rhue, Charleston's starter, took the loss, going six innings and allowing 13 hits and eight runs, two of which were earned. Giroud led the 13-hit Buccaneer attack, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Curtis, Strong and Anderson each had two hits to lead Charleston. ETSU and Charleston will play the final game of the three-game series Sunday at Cardinal Park, with game time set at 1:00 p.m.
