ETSU Falls To Tennessee, 8-3

Johnson City, Tenn. - Tennessee's John Massey went 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Volunteers in an 8-3 win over East Tennessee State before 513 fans at ETSU's Cardinal Park.

The Bucs (6-17) lost despite outhitting the Vols 10-6. ETSU left 10 runners on base to Tennessee's six. The Bucs were led by Jeremy Terry (2-3, two runs scored) and Chad Boruff (2-4). Buccaneer Jackson Simerly pitched well, going 6.2 innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits.

Tennessee (25-8) starter Kurt Scott pitched one inning before being relieved by Marlyn Tisdale (6.0 innings, three runs, nine hits) who improved to 1-0 on the season. ETSU starter Josh Warner fell to 0-2 after pitching 0.1 innings and allowing four runs on one hit and yielding four walks.

The Vols opened the game with four runs in the top of the first. Warner walked the first three Tennessee batters before Massey hit a run-scoring single. After another walk, Warner was relieved by left-hander Simerly. Tennessee scored its last two runs of the frame on ground balls

The visitors increased their lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer by Justin Parker in the third. The Bucs got on the board in the home half of the third. Jeremy Terry began the frame with a single and later scored on a Volunteer error. After Shannon Carter reached on a walk he later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice by Ed Sparks.

ETSU closed the gap to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Chuck Dewald's double plated Terry. Tennessee scored two in the seventh on doubles by Jeff Christensen and Massey.

ETSU will return to action on Wednesday, March 29 at 3 p.m. when it hosts UNC Asheville.
