Monday, April 03, 2000

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Senior Matt Baber (Claxton, Tenn.) and freshman Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) both earned Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week honors for the week of March 27-April 2. Baber, the SoCon Pitcher-of-the-Week, pitched the Bucs to two wins while Boruff, the SoCon Player-of-the-Week, led the team with a .474 batting average in five games this week.

Baber hurled two complete-game victories to improve his season record to 5-5 and lower his earned run average to 5.21. He allowed just five runs (four earned) in 18.0 innings of work for a 2.00 ERA. Baber struck out 11 and walked just two. Boruff stroked nine hits in 19 at-bats (.474) in the five games -- belting three home runs, scoring seven times and collecting seven RBIs. He leads the team with six home runs in 27 games.

After an 8-3 setback to Tennessee on March 28, ETSU rebounded behind a strong pitching performance by Baber to defeat UNC Asheville, 5-3, on March 29. Baber allowed three runs on six hits in the complete-game victory. The Bucs' ace struck out nine, giving up one walk.

ETSU next traveled to Davidson for a three-game weekend series. Boruff belted three home runs and knocked in six RBIs to lead the Bucs in a 17-3 win in the opening game of the series (April 1). The slugging first baseman crushed a solo shot in the third, a two-run shot in the fifth and finished with a three-run homer down the left field line in the eighth.

Boruff hit a run-scoring double in the fifth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Wildcats in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. On April 2, ETSU finished the series with a 6-2 win behind another stellar pitching performance by Baber. The right-hander scattered 12 hits over nine innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. He allowed just one earned run and fanned two Wildcat batters.

The Bucs (9-18, 6-9 Southern Conference) will return to action with a non-conference game against Wake Forest at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5.
