Saturday, May 06, 2000

Johnson City, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State's Matt Nunley delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning of a seven-inning affair to lead the Bucs in a 4-2 win against Belmont in the second game of today's doubleheader. Belmont won the first game 9-3, also in a seven-inning game.

ETSU's game two starter, Matt Baber hurled a complete game, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs, to improve to 9-6 on the season.

Raymond McBride gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the night-cap when his double scored Nathan Copeland. McBride went 2-2 with two RBIs in the game. The game remained that way until the fifth when Belmont's Jim Forrester belted his first career home run, a two-run shot that gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

ETSU (18-27) loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out. After getting Shannon Carter to ground into a fielder's choice, Belmont starter Brandon Jaggers hit Raymond McBride in the hand, forcing in the tying run. Nunley followed with the game-winning single that gave the Bucs a 4-2 lead.

Jaggers threw 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, and fell to 8-6 on the year.

The opening game was scoreless until the top of the third when Greg Whittaker scored on a Mat Meade fielder's choice. Back-to-back singles by Jerrod Smith and Josh Brummett gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead off Buc starter Reid Casey.

Meade earned his second RBI of the game with a single in the fourth that plated Forrester. A fifth-inning two-run double by Brummett gave Belmont a 6-0 lead. Following a 42-minute rain delay, ETSU reliever Jackson Simerly retired the next two batters to end the Belmont threat.

The Bruins (27-24) added two more in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead before the Bucs struck for two in the home half of the inning. Chad Boruff led off the frame with a double and later scored on a Carter single. A Copeland single plated Ryan McKinney who had reached on a walk. Belmont closed out the scoring with one in the seventh.

Belmont's Cody Fisher threw a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits, to improve to 8-4. Casey suffered the loss for ETSU, falling to 5-7.

The Bucs and Bruins will complete their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
