JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2013) – The ETSU baseball team wrapped up its first week of fall practice over the weekend by holding scrimmages on Friday and Sunday at Thomas Stadium.
Below are some of the top performances from the scrimmages, along with comments from head coach Tony Skole.
Sophomore outfielder Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) led the charge by going 6-for-8 with five runs scored and three stolen bases, while fellow sophomore Andrew Lasure (Stanford, Ky.) hit .500 (3-6) and drove in a pair of runs. Junior shortstop Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) finished the weekend going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI and freshman local standout Chris Cook (Kingsport, Tenn.) went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases.
Senior Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was impressive at the plate and on the mound as he hit .375 with one triple, one home run and five RBI, and was also one of three pitchers to toss two scoreless innings. Joining the senior left-hander with scoreless outings were fellow senior Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) and sophomore lefty Josh Jacques (Rollinsford, N.H.).
Comments from Coach Skole
“I was very pleased with our first weekend of scrimmages. It was great to see this ball club in a game environment. I thought the tempo of our play was outstanding, and for the most part, our actions were very crisp and decisive. We had some strong performances and I saw some impressive efforts.
“A big key for our program is our returning players need to be better and improved from a year ago. You can tell with some of our returning guys their level of play has been elevated – just by the way they go about their business. There is a lot of poise and confidence in many of our returning players.
“As far as our freshmen are concerned, we had a few guys who did some nice things this weekend. There is a huge learning curve for these young guys, but it was very encouraging to see many of them jump right in and compete at a high level.
“It is of the utmost importance we continue to work hard this week and improve in the areas that gave us trouble this past weekend. This is a hard working group and I can’t wait for practice this week.”
