JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 28, 2013) – The North Florida baseball team soared its way to an 11-run win over ETSU on Thursday night, as the Ospreys opened the three-game conference series with a 15-4 victory over the Bucs at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys – who scored four runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings – pounded out 20 hits and were led by Donnie Dewees and Ryan Roberson. Dewees went 4-for-6 with one double, three triples, four runs scored, and drove in seven, while Roberson posted four hits and drove in three of his five runs with a three-run homer in the seventh. In total, eight UNF batters ended with at least one hit, while six different Osprey hitters generated multi-hit games.
ETSU (13-9, 3-4 A-Sun) was led by senior Andrew Green’s (Powell, Tenn.) two-hit game as the outfielder finished with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
North Florida (19-9, 2-1) threatened in the second as Ryan Roberson led off the inning with a double down the line in left, and after Corbin Olmstead tapped one back to the mound, Griffin Krieg (Nashville, Tenn.) hit Drew Weeks to put runners on first and second with one out. Krieg worked out of the early jam as the right-handed pitcher struck out the next two Osprey hitters he faced to keep the game scoreless.
However, after leaving three runners stranded in the first two innings, UNF struck for four runs on six hits in the third inning to jump ahead, 4-0. Dewees came through with a one-out, two-run scoring triple to the gap in right-center, while he scored on Roberson’s RBI double and the Ospreys capped off their scoring with a fielder’s choice RBI by Weeks.
Things didn’t get any better for the Blue and Gold in the fourth and fifth innings as the Ospreys plated four more runs in each of the frames to expand their lead to, 12-0.
ETSU finally scratched some runs across in the sixth as the Blue and Gold went to the bench to manufacture their runs. The Bucs – who sent six pinch hitters to the plate in the inning – picked up an RBI double by Green and Trey York’s (Knoxville, Tenn.) infield single drove in a pair of runs, making it a 12-3 ballgame.
Unfortunately, North Florida got those three runs back in the seventh when Roberson’s home run to left-center gave the Ospreys a 15-3 advantage.
Freshman Dylan Powers (Blue Ridge, Va.) wrapped up the scoring when his two-out single to center scored Green in the eighth.
Krieg suffered the loss (2-2) after being charged for eight runs on 11 hits in three innings of work, while Tommy Organ kept his perfect record intact for the Ospreys. Organ improved to 4-0 by holding the Bucs to three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, freshman lefty Kevin Marnon (Shelby Township, Mich.) tossed two innings of shutout ball, along with striking out two UNF hitters in relief.
Game two of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday night. Senior right-hander Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) will take to the mound for the Blue and Gold, while UNF has yet to name its starter.
