Tuesday, May 22, 2012

MACON, Ga. (May 22, 2012) – ETSU senior outfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Scruggs became the Atlantic Sun home run champion, while also pacing the entire country with 20 home runs this season. The 20 homers rank as the fifth most in ETSU single season history and were just five behind the record setting 25 homers former Buccaneer Paul Hoilman recorded during the 2010 season.

In addition to the impressive home run totals, Scruggs ranks fourth in the league in slugging percentage (.581), seventh in runs scored (44), sixth in RBIs (46), second in total bases (129) and 11th in stolen bases (11).

Scruggs closed out his ETSU career in the top-five in school history for career games played (207), at-bats (802), homers (46) and runs (182).

In a 15-3 win against La Salle earlier this season, Scruggs finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, five runs scored and five RBIs. Just one week earlier, Scruggs recorded a RBI walk off single against Indiana in the series opener. Meanwhile, Scruggs blasted a home run in his first four games to start the season.

This was the first all-conference honor for Scruggs; however, he is a two-time A-Sun Player of the Week and was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team in 2010.
