JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 7, 2012) – Trailing 2-1 after five innings of play, North Florida lit up the scoreboard with 12 runs in the sixth inning and the Ospreys claimed the series over ETSU with a 13-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
Starting pitcher Tyler Moore (4-1) earned the victory after allowing six hits and four runs (two earned), while walking two and striking out nine. ETSU starter Jake Long (Anderson, S.C.) was charged with the loss after allowing just three hits and one earned run in 5.2 innings. The Bucs committed a team-high four errors on the afternoon as 12 of North Florida’s 13 runs were unearned.
T.J. Gavlik, Tyler Marcinov, and Alex Bacon led the offensive charge for the Ospreys with two hits apiece. Gavlik was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, Marincov finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and Bacon was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) and Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) led the Bucs at the plate with two hits apiece. Riopedre also had one of the three ETSU RBIs on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was 1-for-5 with two RBI and he has now reached base in 23 consecutive games.
After two and a half innings of scoreless baseball, ETSU struck first with a two-run triple by Freeman in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) laced a double into the gap in left center and Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) followed by getting aboard via a hit by pitch. Freeman followed by ripping the 0-1 pitch from Moore into the left center field gap for a two-run triple – putting the Bucs in front 2-0.
UNF got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Alex Bacon lifted the first pitch he saw from Long just over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
The Ospreys broke the game wide open in the sixth inning by plating 12 runs on six hits, while the Bucs helped the rally with two errors. ETSU allowed six walks in the inning as North Florida sent 16 batters to the plate against four Buccaneer pitchers.
The Bucs added two runs in the bottom half of the sixth on one hit. ETSU benefitted from a UNF error at the beginning of the inning as Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) reached base on an error by the second baseman. The ground ball was fielded cleanly by second baseman Joe Wielbruda, but his throw sailed into the ETSU dugout – allowing Pratt to advance to second base. Then, Niesman was hit by a pitch and Riopedre laced an RBI single to left center, which scored Pratt. With two outs in the inning and runners on first and third, Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) struck out swinging, but the ball got past catcher Corey Bass – allowing Niesman to score and McPherson to reach first – making the score 13-4.
ETSU will return to action on Tuesday as the Bucs will travel to Asheville, N.C. to take on UNC Asheville at 7:05 p.m. The Bucs return home to face SEC foe Tennessee on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. inside Thomas Stadium.
