JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team rallied to score nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Bucs defeated Appalachian State 9-4 Wednesday night at Cardinal Park.
Sophomore Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) picked up his second win of the year after throwing a perfect eighth inning in relief, while Zach Joyce was tagged with the loss after giving up one run without recording an out.
Doane, Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) each had two hits in the contest for ETSU as both teams had seven hits apiece. Doane led the way offensively for ETSU as he scored two runs and drove in four on the night.
Jeremy Dowdy put the Mountaineers ahead 1-0 in the top of the second as he doubled in Tyler Tewell from first. Later in the inning, Doug Jones gave ASU a 2-0 advantage after singling in Dowdy.
Zack Briggs increased the Mountaineer lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth as he drove a solo home run over the scoreboard in left. With the home run, Briggs ran his hit streak to 10-games, a season high for ASU.
After being held in check for much of the game, Doane got the Bucs on the board in the bottom of the seventh as he deposited a three-run homer over the left field fence to even the game at 3-all.
ETSU loaded the bases to start the eighth as Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and
Reeder both singled after a Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) walk. Hoilman put the Buccaneers in front in the next at bat as he singled to left scoring McPherson to make the score 4-3. The Bucs would go on to score five more runs in the inning on bases loaded walks to Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.), an RBI single by Doane and a couple wild pitches to grab a commanding 9-3 lead.
The Mountaineers threatened in the top of the ninth as ASU loaded the bases with two outs. After a walk to Derek Brown made the score 9-4, Reeder struck out Jason Wallace to end the contest. The run in the ninth snapped a 14.1 inning scoreless streak for Reeder.
