JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 22, 2004) - Former East Tennessee State baseball player Brandon Cross was named General Manager of the Johnson City Cardinals at a Thursday afternoon press conference at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Johnson City Cardinals are the Advanced Rookie League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Johnson City franchise is a charter member of the Appalachian League, a 10-team league that was originally founded in 1911.
Cross played two seasons on the infield for the Bucs, playing in 106 games and starting 102. He had a .340 career batting average for the Bucs, hitting eight home runs, driving in 76 runs and scoring another 77. His best season came in 2001 as a junior when Cross batted .351 with four homers and 45 RBI while starting all 55 Buccaneer games.
Prior to coming to East Tennessee State, Cross was a star at Walters State Community College and at Sullivan East High School. He earned second-team All-American honors at Walters State in 1999 after batting .519 with five home runs and 62 RBI. Cross was named all-conference from 1996-98 and all-region following his junior and senior seasons at Sullivan East.
"I am very proud and excited for Brandon," commented ETSU head coach Tony Skole, Cross' coach for his two seasons as a Buccaneer. "Brandon was a great player here and I know he will tackle this opportunity with great energy and enthusiasm. I think this is a great testament to Brandon's character, integrity and work ethic, for him to attain this position just two years out of college. It will be fun working with him and watching him improve the Cardinals organization."
Cross graduated in Dec. 2002 with a degree in Sports Management and will complete his work for his master's degree in Sports Management in May.
